Crash!

So Elliot Johnson ran over Frankie Cervelli at home plate yesterday.

Johnson, an obscure infielder and member of the Tampa Rays' 40-man roster, was assuredly playing hard, trying to make an impression on Rays' manager, Joe Maddon.

Cervelli, the 22 year old catcher with perhaps a big league future, suffered a broken bone in his right wrist. How long this sets him back is not immediately apparent as he probably would not have made the Yankees' roster this spring.

So, here's the deal:
How do YOU, the reader, feel about this?
Was Johnson right in running over a catcher in Spring Training?
Is NY manager Joe Girardi right in feeling that the play was excessive and unnecessary?
Will this ignite a more bitter rivalry between Tampa and New York?
Is Shelley Duncan unchained and ready to locomotive somebody?
Stay tuned......

Shelley Duncan is always unchained and ready to go ;)

Here's my take. I think Elliot Johnson is just trying to make a name for himself and make the team. Unfortunately that comes at the cost of Francisco Cervelli's wrist. The problem, to me, comes when Maddon says that it was ok for him to do that. The unexperienced players that block the plate and barrel over the catcher (I think he could have been a little less ridiculous, to tell the truth) may not really know any better, but the manager should say that he regrets that Cervelli got hurt. If this were the regular season, that play is fine. You do what you've got to do.

But yeah. The Rays' manager's response was not to my liking. Girardi's unhappiness was definitely warranted.

Thank you, Andrea, always good to hear from ye :-)

That's a great point - both players were somewhat inexperienced, and one got hurt. It could have just as easily have been the other one [well, not when he went helmet-first, but maybe if he had gone feet-first].

Today's the day the Showdown shall commence, and delicious drama indeed. Both sides firmly believe in their righteousness. Will we witness fireworks? Will cooler heads prevail? 'Twill only take a spark to ignite this powder keg.... Stay tuned!
